09:16 PM PDT on Saturday, July 12, 2008
Tyee, Ore.--A 17-year-old boy drowned in the Umpqua River at the James Wood Boat Ramp while surfing with two friends Saturday afternoon.
After surfing down the rapids the teen and his friends grabbed onto a rock in the river. The 17-year-old slipped, let go and was pulled underwater.
His friends tied to reach him but were unable to pull the teen back. Around 6:15 p.m. Douglas County Dive Team recovered the victim’s body downstream in about 26 feet of water.
None of the teens were wearing lifejackets.
