Tommy Siniard told The Oregonian that Cole Ortega of Bend has had follow-up operations to reattach a biceps muscle and a triceps tendon and to graft skin from his right thigh over the wound.

Ortega was in a large group of surfers using the beach near Pacific City. The ocean was jammed with boats, surfers and others on the Fourth of July weekend.

Siniard says Ortega also has been treated for two broken ribs and a punctured lung. He says Ortega was able to sit up Friday morning and talk.
