ASTORIA, Ore. -- A 40-foot tuna boat has sunk about 60 miles off the Oregon Coast near Cape Lookout, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Coast Guard officials got a mayday call shortly before 5:30 a.m. from the Miss Carol. Crew said the boat was taking on water, but the Coast Guard then lost radio contact.
Two helicopters, one from Astoria and one from Newport, and a 47-foot motorized life boat from Tillamook Bay were all dispatched to assist the Miss Carol’s crew. Meantime, another fishing vassal in the area, the Pursuit, responded to an urgent marine broadcast and headed to assist the Miss Carol as well, the Coast Guard said.
The Pursuit arrived first and found the sinking boat’s three-person crew in a life boat. No one was injured.
The crew was en route to the port of Hammond on the Pursuit, the Coast Guard said.
There was no sign of debris from the sunken tuna boat. All Coast Guard crews had returned.
