Deputies in Polk County said they’ll start playing the role of ghostbusters.

Sheriff’s deputies said they’ve cited dozens of people trespassing at the Spring Valley Church on Brush College Road in Zema -- seeking evidence the church north of Salem is haunted.

Police said the Internet myth has brought much unwanted attention to the church.

Legends have been reported about ghostly apparitions, blood on the door, moving pews and a man in black riding in front of the church and it’s adjoining cemetery.

Church caretaker Robert Washburn called deputies in February after running people off of the property.

Polk county deputies said they’ve issued around 60 citations since June alone.

"I've instructed my deputies to begin taking people into custody,” Sheriff Bob Wolfe said. “We have to get the message across that continued violations of trespassing on the church property are not going to be tolerated. This is taking up way too many resources and is apparently a blatant disregard for the church property."

Many of the people arrested said they just ignored the no trespassing signs on the property.

According to the Web site for the Pacific Paranormal Research Society, investigator Jen Olson unable to find any evidence of the ghastly happenings or sightings, but appeared to be a place teens and young adults at times liked to party after dark.

The sheriff said anyone underage will be put into protective custody adults will be taken to jail.

“Maybe some time in jail will get the message across," Wolfe said.
