Volcanic activity may have triggered small flood
05:29 PM PDT on Tuesday, July 10, 2007
Scientists on Mt. St. Helens Tuesday were checking on reports of a small flood that muddied up the Cowlitz River.
According to the U.S. Geolocial Survey, small eruptions continued on the mountain, causing rockfalls in the crater as the new lava dome grows.
There has been no explosive activity, officials said, but seismometers around the crater recorded signals last Friday suggesting a small flood -- called a lahar.
The lahar may have originated in the crater then sent debris into the nearby river. It could also have been caused by a glacier, scientists said.

Cowlitz River neighbor Neil Crawford said the river was clear and green until Sunday when it suddenly turned muddy and brown.
Scientists said that was likely a temporary condition and the water appeared back to normal Tuesday.
