PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to rename 39th Avenue in honor of U.S. labor leader Cesar Chavez.

The final decision came Wednesday after months of often contentious debate.
A vote had been widely expected last month but City Council delayed a final decision after hundreds packed a meeting on the issue.
City planners in May recommended renaming 39th for Chavez over two other possibilities, Broadway and Grand avenues.
Proponents have been lobbying city government to rename a street for Chavez since 2007.
Opponents worried about costs and what they called a haphazard renaming process. Business owners along 39th Ave. said they would appeal the decision.
