Silverton man fitted with 'bionic' hand
06:32 PM PDT on Tuesday, July 8, 2008
It may sound like science fiction -- but an Oregon man is one of the first to receive a bionic hand.
James Bristol showed it off Tuesday at Hanger Prosthetics in Northeast Portland. The 44-year old Silverton man lost his hand while working at a wood mill last August.
The world's first bionic hand has five independently moving fingers.
He controls the hand through muscles in his arm. The muscles transmit signals to a micro-processor.
Bristol, a father of three, is now learning to drive, write and eat with his new hand.
"You know I can help my kids clean their bedrooms if need be, or make them lunch, just deal with them in every day life," he said.
The company began selling the bionic hand last summer.
