Medical Examiner: Priest, friend died before 911 call
04:39 PM PDT on Tuesday, July 3, 2007
Oregon State Medical Examiner Dr. Karen Gunson said Fr. David Schwartz and Cheryl Gibb were so severely injured in a car crash that they died within one minute after impact.
Schwartz died from blunt force chest injuries that caused a lacerated heart and profuse internal bleeding, according to Gunson. He also suffered severe neck and spinal cord trauma.
Gibbs died from a blunt force chest injury. She had a lacerated aoerta and massive internal bleeding.
"Both would have died very rapidly, within a minute or less of sustaining the injuries," Gunson said.
The pair was no longer alive, then, when Washington County 911 received the witness' phone call about the accident. The witness had to drive 11 miles to reach a pay phone, from which he called 911.
