Gresham Mayor Shane Bemis faces a financial dilemma all too familiar to more and more homeowners. He faces foreclosure on his home in the Persimmon Country Club neighborhood.

Unlike the money woes facing Portland Mayor Sam Adams – cash flow problems to deal with a scandal – Bemis is trying to settle financial issues from a divorce.

Bemis’ four-bedroom, 4,853 square-foot home has an outstanding loan of $666,474.

In a prepared statement, Bemis said "given the deep recession and the housing bust, we knew that it would be extremely difficult to find an interested buyer."

Bemis said that because of the divorce, he was forced to make “unmanageable” payments on the Persimmon home and a second residence.  “I became one of millions of Americans to face pre-foreclosure. I worked diligently with my bank to structure a deal that would enable me to keep the house on the market longer.  Fortunately, we found a qualified buyer and accepted an offer."

He expects to close the deal later this month.
