Bicyclist attacked

CLACKAMAS, Ore. -- A Clackamas man was hospitalized in serious condition with multiple broken bones after he was brutally beaten while riding his bike near his Happy Valley home. Police have arrested two Portland teens in the beating.

Clackamas County deputies called paramedics after they found 63-year-old Steven Thomas Ruhl lying on the ground on SE Fuller Road around 11:30 p.m.

An employee of the Pet Smart nearby told deputies he was closing the store when he saw two people kicking Ruhl on the ground.

Ruhl said two suspects had harassed him days before, and when he saw them while riding his bike he took off in the other direction. But Ruhl said the two chased him down and knocked him from the bike, then beat him.

Deputies were able to track down 19-year-old Kyle Robert De Whitt and a 16-year-old after a short chase on foot.

Medics took Ruhl to a Portland hospital with several broken ribs, a fractured pelvis, a broken foot, a broken clavicle, and possible inner cranial bleeding.

The two suspects were charged with assault.
