Corey Patterson, 18, of West Linn died in his sleep over the weekend, according to police.

WEST LINN, Ore. -- Family and friends were grieving the mysterious death of an 18-year-old West Linn teen who died in his sleep over the weekend.

Corey Patterson was hanging out with his friends Friday night and came home around 1 a.m. and gave his mom a hug before going to his room for the night, according to police. In the morning, when his younger sister went him to wake he was unresponsive. The family called 9-1-1. Paramedics pronounced him dead.

"I was completely shocked," Patterson's best friend Brent Phillips told KGW. Phillips says was in contact with his friend minutes before his death. "I was texting him at 1:48 a.m....and he was completely normal, you know? He was asking 'what's up'?"

Patterson’s death was called “suspicious” by West Linn Police Department on Tuesday, but "only in that he's a relatively healthy 18-year-old man," said Sgt. Neil Hennelly. "An 18-year-old young man typically doesn't just keel over."

A toxicology report to determine Patterson’s cause of death could take four to six weeks.

Patterson's death led to an outpouring of support in online social communities at Facebook and MySpace. A web page in his memory had more than 300 members who offered condolence. Read Facebook memories

Patterson graduated from West Linn High School two weeks ago.

Police said they would continue to investigate his death.

The family recently moved to West Linn from Alabama, they were planning to move again soon to Atlanta.

"Dana and I had high hopes for Corey’s future," Sam Patterson told KGW in an email. "He was either going to start college in Atlanta (where we are relocating) this fall, or enlist in either the Marines or the Air Force, serve his country, and then begin college after that."

His family doesn’t believe he experimented with drugs or alcohol more than any other teenager.

His funeral is scheduled Friday, July 3rd, at 12:30PM,  at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 1271 Overlook Drive, Lake Oswego.
