SANDY, Ore. -- A 58-year-old woman suffered minor injuries in an encounter with a black bear at her home just outside Sandy, officials said.

About 11 p.m. Sunday, Dora Sue heard noises coming from her back porch and thought it was one of her pets. She opened the door and saw a bear eight feet away, feeding on sunflower seeds stored in an aluminum garbage can.

When she yelled, the bear charged.

"Just one lunge and he was there...I've never screamed. I don't scream. I'm not a screamer, but I screamed and I made a lot of noise," Sue told KGW.

The bear swiped her, injuring her arm, foot and thigh, before running off, according to police.

At 3 a.m. Monday morning, the bear returned, but Sue's husband scared him off.

Sue suffered scratches and a puncture wound. She was treated at a local hospital.

Her house is located about five miles northeast of Sandy.

Wildlife biologists from the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife were working to place a bear trap near the area of Coalman Road, northeast of Highway 26.
