TriMet: Bike boom leaves little room on MAX
01:39 PM PDT on Friday, June 27, 2008
As gas prices keep rising, so do the number of people riding both bicycles and TriMet. But those trying to bring their bikes on the MAX, may find themselves out of luck.
According to TriMet, the number of commuters who take their bikes onto the MAX has exploded. But there's a problem: the trains have limited space for bikes.
So this week, at the 185th station in Beaverton, TriMet security guards kicked cyclists off bike crowded trains and would not let any board unless there were empty bike hangers.
TriMet says it's a matter of safety. But cyclists say they're frustrated by the crack-down and the lack of bike-space. Deborah Ulinger and her husband often bike to work.

When the do, they take their bikes onboard the MAX.
"It's frustrating because we have places to go and things to do and so I know it's a safety issue but if they could provide more spaces for bikes it would be great," said Ulinger.
Mary Fetsch, a spokesperson with TriMet says this is an ongoing conflict .
"Given the explosive growth in bikes we'll never have enough capacity on transit to accomodate every bike especially during rush hour," said Fetch.
TriMet recommends commuters either use a fold-up bike or recommends riders lock-up their bikes at the MAX station. Officials say they are looking into relocating some bike lockers.
But as for adding more bike space on the trains, TriMet says, at this point, that is not an feasible option.
