Hang up and drive in Washington starting today
09:17 AM PDT on Tuesday, July 1, 2008
A new law went into effect in Washington state Tuesday -- drivers are no longer allowed to talk on their cell phone while driving unless they have a hands-free device or speakerphone.
The law, which was passed in 2007, levies a $124 fine to any driver caught with a cell phone to the ear. The offense is considered secondary and drivers can not be stopped simply for committing the violation.
Law enforcement officers must first identify another traffic offense in order to stop a vehicle.
There is an exception in the law that would allow drivers to place a call without a hands-free unit. In the event of an emergency, drivers can call 9-1-1 and not risk a citation.
Washington State Patrol says there will be no grace period in the law’s enforcement.
Officers are authorized to issue citations.
