Poll: Education, illegal immigration top Oregonians' concerns
03:55 PM PDT on Monday, June 25, 2007
Education, illegal immigration and affordable healthcare are the most important issues facing Oregonians, according to a new poll.
The survey asked 500 Oregonians, "What is the most important issue you would like to see your state government officials do something about?" Education topped the list. "It's really in a tier by itself," says Adam Davis of Davis, Hibbitts & Midghall Opinion Research.
Twenty one percent of the respondents said either education or education funding is most important issue. Survey results indicate Oregonians value quality schools, along with adequate, stable funding.
Immigration has also become one of the biggest issues. The poll was taken shortly after a federal immigration raid at a Portland food processing plant. The issue has momentum say pollsters. Twelve percent of those surveyed said state government needs to address illegal immigration.
"It is interesting to see how older Oregonians are more concerned about this issue than younger Oregonians," said Davis.
Affordable healthcare is also a concern. Nine percent of Oregonians are most worried about healthcare. Davis explains, "This is an issue that over the past few years, more and more Oregonians are feeling strongly about, they want something done about." Further questioning reveals, Oregonians are particularly concerned about the cost of health insurance.
The poll also looked at influence. Oregonians view corporations less favorably than small businesses, churches or non-profits.
The survey was conducted by Davis, Hibbits & Midghall Opinion Research for Newschannel 8 and The Oregonian.
