Experts say Willamette Valley worst in nation for allergies

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Can’t stop sneezing? Feel like someone poured pepper in your eyes? You’re certainly not alone.

The area in orange is the worst for high pollen counts and associated allergy problems, according to the Web site, pollen.com

According to the Web site, pollen.com, the Willamette Valley has the highest pollen count in the nation right now, translating into major allergies.

The Web site lists Eugene, Salem, Portland and Medford is the worst areas in the nation.

A U.S. map shows an area highlighted orange marking the highest pollen counts of between 7.3 to 9.6. The orange covers part of Oregon and also dips just a bit into Washington and California.

The Web site reported that the pollen problem was linked mostly to grass, sorel and dock in Portland; grass, cedar, juniper, sorel and dock in Eugene; grass, cedar, juniper, sorel and dock in in Salem; and grass, sagebrush, sage and chenopods in Medford.

Daytona Beach, Fl; Orlando, FL; Tampa, FL; Rapid City, S.D., and Hartford, CT were listed as the cities with the lowest pollen counts in the nation on June 23.

Tips for people with allergies:

--According to the Web site Mother Earth Living, incorporate moderate amounts of garlic, onions, raw local honey, and vitamin C-rich foods into your diet

--Reduce the pollen count in your yard by landscaping with plants that produce minimal or no pollen

--Avoid wool blankets, which collect dust

--Good filtration of incoming fresh air and of recirculating air can help lessen exposure to allergens
