PORTLAND, Ore. -- A brave neighbor wrestled a shotgun out of the hands of a man who police said was shooting at vehicles and apartments and threatening residents in Northeast Portland early Sunday morning.
People first reported hearing shots fired just before 1 a.m., alerting police dispatchers to send officers to an apartment complex in the 700 block of NE 94th Avenue.
Portland Police Sergeant Kathe Kent said 43-year-old Dong Pham went to the apartment complex with a shotgun and started shooting cars and at least one apartment window.
Pham then went into an apartment where a man and a woman were hiding in a bedroom.
A former roommate that identified himself as “Deon” said that Pham was a former roommate kicked out due to drugs and he wanted a relationship with the woman living there romantically, she did not
“He'd been threatening her. If she don't cooperate he would come back and make her regret it, make her miserable,” Deon said.
Deon said he grabbed a fan as he waited for the suspect to come in.
"I would hold it up and stand right there just waiting and waiting and he just breaks down the door with the barrel of the shotgun. As soon as he starts breaking the door down, one hand is opening the door, I smack him with the fan in the head, he fell down with the gun.”
“I pull him out and throw him down the stairs and I grabbed the gun, but there's no bullet in the chamber. If there was one, I would have given him one,” Deon added.
The fight continued all the way down the stairs.
“He was still moving so I kept beating him with the gun, making him not fight back because I don't know if he was another weapon or not.”
Police eventually arrived and arrested Pham. He had to be taken to the hospital with serious facial injuries.
No one else, including the man and the woman in the bedroom, was seriously hurt.
Sergeant Kent said Pham also allegedly went to same man’s work Saturday and tried to attack him.
Pham was charged with attempted murder.
