SALEM, Ore. -- Dozens of people showed up for a preview of the Department of State Lands auction in Salem.

But instead of multi-million dollar real estate, the state is auctioning off contents from abandoned safe deposit boxes.

Don Leighton is a man on a mission.

“I think this is probably worth $250,” he said.

"These are unique treasures that you probably can’t get from anywhere beside an antique store, “ Said Patrick Tate, Unclaimed Property Administrator.

The contents of the boxes will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

They are abandoned, either through a death or the fact that family members didn’t know it existed. From diamonds and pearls to engraved pocket watches, there are treasures hidden in the glass-covered boxes.

“This (pocket watch) would be great for fathers’ day.” Said Tate.

But where you’ll find silverware from the Nazi Germany times to tea sets from London, you’ll also find strange things. There are rocks, yes rocks, postcards, old Sports Illustrated magazines, and an autographed picture of Tom Selleck.

But for Don Leighton, there’s no time to browse. He’s a man focused and determined to find the diamond in the ruff.

When it comes to treasure hunting, it isn’t much fun.

“It’s stressful, you’re spending a lot of money and it’s competitive.” Said Leighton.

The auction will take place at Parrish Middle School in Salem Saturday, June 20th at 9:30 am.

It’s located at 802 Capitol St. NE.
