A driver veered into oncoming traffic just after leaving a wedding and hit a deputy head-on Saturday night, killing the deputy and one of his relatives near Gervais, police said.

According to Lieutenant Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police, 33-year-old Marion County Deputy, Kelly James Fredinburg, was driving his patrol car Southbound on Highway 99E North of Gervais when the crash occurred.

Fredinburg was apparently on his way to assist another agency when he crashed head-on with a white Ford Crown Victoria headed Northbound.

Police say the deputy's car flipped and caught fire.

Hastings said "preliminary investigation indicates the Deputy had his marked patrol car emergency lights and siren activated."

The force of the impact threw both vehicle off the road. Fredinburg's car landed upside down and apparently caught fire.

Hastings said fire crews quickly responded and dowsed the flames, but Fredinburg died at the scene.

One of the three passengers in the other car, identified Monday as Oscar Ascencio Amaya, 19, of Woodburn, later died at the hospital. Driver Alfredo De Jesus Ascencio, 20, of Woodburn, was also taken to Oregon Health and Science Univeristy in critical condition and his other passenger, Daniel Alvarez De Jesus, 24, of California, suffered minor injuries. Police said the trio was related and had just attended a wedding together in Salem.

There was no evidence indicating that the driver was drunk but police said they don't know why he veered over the center line.

The skid marks were the two cars slid off of Hwy 99E.

Fredinburg joined the Marion County Sheriff's Office in August 2006. He worked for the Polk County Sheriff's Office as a corrections and patrol deputy for six years prior to that. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, ages 12 and 3.

A memorial fund for Fredinburg was set up at U.S. Bank.
