CLACKAMAS -- A female deputy shot a man threatening her with two knives early Monday morning, police said.

The suspect later died at an area hospital and the deputy was not hurt.

A team of investigators was on the scene gathering evidence and taking measurements for most of the morning and Detective Jim Strovink with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said he was confident the deputy was acting in self-defense.

Police said the incident all started around 3:30 a.m., when someone called 9-1-1 from a pay phone to report a suspicious man lurking in the shadows near SE 82nd Dr. and Highway 212 in Clackamas.

Detective Jim Strovink with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said one officer responded to the call and the man approached her, holding two knives. She ordered him to stop and he kept coming at her, so Strovink said the deputy "fired multiple shots."

The unidentified man, described by police as about 25 years old, was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead a little over two hours later.

No names have been released yet.

Strovink said the deputy, a 19-year veteran, was not hurt and was put on administrative leave, which is the normal procedure during this type of investigation.
