Portland Mayor Tom Potter had surgery Friday to remove a growth from a common type of skin cancer from his cheek. A representative said he is recovering at home and doing well.

The mayor is expected to be back in his office on Monday and is expected to make a full recovery.

He was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a form of slow-growing, highly treatable skin cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, 80 or 90 percent of the one million skin cancers diagnosed each year are of that type.

"My doctor told me that, while the surgery is necessary, I should expect a full recovery," Potter said. I look forward to being back in the office Monday morning."

Experts said basal cell cancer often develops on sun-exposed areas over several years and it was unusual for it to spread.
