Absentee rates soared at some Portland schools with large Latino immigrant populations after Tuesday's raid at a produce packing plant.

Administrators said the raid created a climate of fear that has driven many undocumented residents underground.

"Yesterday we had about 50 kids absent out of a population of about 420," said Antonio Lopez, Principal at Clarendon Elementary. Lopez said at least a dozen parents worked at the Fresh Del Monte facility in North Portland, and that many families are now afraid to leave their homes.

Lopez said some students have been afraid that their parents might not be there when they got home from school, arrested by federal agents. One student, he said, went to the office every hour on Wednesday.

"I found out he was calling his mother to find out if she was OK, if she was at home," said Lopez.

Agents arrested 167 people during Tuesday's raid. Of those, 131 were sent to a detention center in Tacoma, and 36 were allowed to remain in the area for health or child care reasons.

One immigrant, whose identity we agreed to conceal, said her undocumented husband was arrested Tuesday at their apartment after agents came to their apartment and banged on the front door. Through an interpreter, she told KGW that she's afraid to go back to her apartment.

She also said she's worried about how she and the remaining family will survive without her husband's income, since she's afraid to leave the house to go and find a job.
