"This is a sensitive political subject and I think you are going to get a lot of political commentary if it happened in New York city or Portland, Oregon." said Ron Tammen, Director of Portland State University's School of Government.

Portland Mayor Tom Potter lashed out against a federal agents involved in Tuesday's raid, "I believe they should keep their hands off these people."

Tammen explains politically, Oregon is considered a moderate state. Oregon is home to a large number of illegal immigrants because of its proximity to the border and large agriculture and food processing industry. "Oregonians have been very tolerant of having this society within our own society," claims Tammen.

Activists calling for strong immigration reform argue, Oregon is a safe haven for illegal immigrants.

"There's a vast network that aids and abet illegal immigration," claims Jim Ludwick, Director of Oregonians for Immigration Reform.
