Coldest 'June-uary' in nearly 10 years

06:14 PM PDT on Tuesday, June 10, 2008

By kgw.com and AP Staff

PORTLAND, Ore. -- If you think June has been unseasonably cold, you're right. Through the first nine days of the month, the average daily high temperature in Portland has been only 62.2 degrees. That's the coldest start to the month since 1999.

Heavy snow falls in Cascades again Tues.

And according to KGW Meteorologist Dave Salesky, Tuesday was likely to be another day for the record books, with Portland expected to tie or break the record for 59 degrees as the lowest high temperature on this date.

Salesky said it's the coldest June in Washington state since the 1890s.

The Oregon and Washington Cascades were getting more fresh snow on Tuesday morning in yet another late snowfall surprise, though the forecast calls for warm weather in the city over the weekend.

"The Cascades are getting dumped on, especially the Washington Cascades," said KGW Meteorologist Dave Salesky.

Timberline Lodge had a base of 153 inches Tuesday morning as snow continued to fall.

Salesky added that by 9 a.m., there were already four inches of new snow at Oregon's Government Camp and "well over that" at Timberline Lodge.

The National Weather Service issued a snow warning for the Washington Cascades and the mountains in northeast Washington.

Forecasters expect 5 to 10 inches of wet snow above the 3,500-foot level Tuesday morning in the Cascades with lesser amounts down to 2,500.

Later in the week in the city, the weather is expected to turn around temporarily.

"It's going to be a rollercoaster," Salesky said. "By Friday we'll be in the upper 70's, low 80's [in Portland.] It should stay mild and dry through Sunday. Then it looks like we'll spiral back down into the freezer again next week."

The average temperature for the Metro Area this time of year is 71 degrees, Salesky said.

Summer officially starts June 21.
