PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Portland meat company has recalled approximately 40,000 pounds of ground beef possibly contaminated with E. coli, according to the USDA.
SP Provisions of Portland recalled beef under the Cascade Natural Beef Brand and SP Provisions brand.
The meat products were distributed widely to hotels, restaurants and institutions across Oregon and Washington, according to the USDA. All affected meats were produced between April 8 and May 28, and distributed on May 29.
Food and safety inspectors identified the possible contamination through microbiological sampling, the government reported. No illnesses have been reported.
The USDA classified the recall as Class I, meaning there is a "reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."
E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause diarrhea, dehydration and kidney failure. Young children, seniors and those with weakened immune systems are most susceptible.
The following products were affected:
Cascade Natural Beef brand:
- 5-pound and 10-pound bags of Cascade Natural ground beef bearing case code “13-016G”
- 5-pound and 10-pound bags of Cascade Natural chili grind bearing case code “13-016C”
- 15-pound boxes of Cascade Natural ground beef patties with case code “13-016GP”
SP Provisions brand:
- 5-pound and 10-pound bags of SP Provisions ground beef bearing case code "01-136"
- 5-pound and 10-pound bags of SP Provisions chili grind bearing case code "01-136"
- 15-pound boxes of SP Provisions ground beef patties bearing case code "01-136P"
The meats all have production dates on them. Date codes are located near the case codes listed above. Meats produced between April 8 and May 28 are affected by the recall.
Each product will also bear a USDA mark of inspection, bearing the SP Provisions code "EST. 2866."
Consumers with questions about the recall can check the USDA web site or call a meat safety hotline at 888-674-6854.
