John Day River wildfire doubles in size, growing

SHANIKO, Ore. -- A fire northeast of Shaniko and a mile south of the John Day River has grown from 50 acres on Saturday to 2,000 acres Sunday afternoon, firefighters said.
It is in an area that is home to threatened and endangered species.
Ground crews and a helicopter, to make water drops, responded Saturday night.
Several fires still burned after heavy lightning Friday night. Smoke jumpers responded to one two miles west of Mount Bachelor.
The Geneva 6 fire, 12 miles southeast of Sisters, was steady at 102 acres and near containment.
Several other Central Oregon fires were reported, most of them under an acre.
