Psychiatric Board can't agree on release of murderer

The State Psychiatric Board, in a Wednesay hearing, could not agree whether to release convicted killer Lee Vojta from the Oregon State Hospital.
The three board members were unable to reach a unanimous decision. Vojta’s possible release will be determined by two additional board members after they review the hearing’s testimony.
Vojta, 56, was found guilty, but insane for the April 2003 murder of 20-year-old Sarah Huang. Vojta said voices in his head told him to shoot the woman in the back of the neck while she was working on a horse farm in Damascas. The two did not know each other.
A Clackamas County judge sentenced Vojta to life at the Oregon State Hospital, unless the Security Board determined he was no longer a threat to himself or society.
State Hospital Doctor Steven Fritz testified to board members Wednesday that Vojta represented a “moderate” risk to the community. But Dr. Fritz testified Vojta would be safe if he was released, as long as he was living in a secure facility under close supervision.
Sarah Huang’s parents disagreed.
“There are significant safety issues at stake if he’s released,” Janet Buehler, Huang’s mother, told board members. She said Vojta would likely kill again.
Two of Vojta’s own sisters testified against his possible release from the State Hospital.
“I feel he is a danger to society,” said sister Linell Martinez, “I am terrified of him visiting my mother.”
After deliberating for approximately 15 minutes, board members announced they could not reach a unanimous decision. Board Chair Dr. Cliff Johannsen told Vojta it would be, “some time” before the board reached its outcome.
That announcement disappointed Sarah Huang’s father.
“What it tells me is there’s some doubt he needs to be kept under total supervision. I find that hard to believe,” said Richard Huang.
