Carjacking victim jumps from car during suspect's getaway
11:16 AM PDT on Thursday, May 29, 2008
GRESHAM, Ore. -- Police were looking for a carjacker that abandoned his prize in Gresham Wednesday night.
Vancouver resident 19-year-old Robert Stover pulled his black Hyundai into the lot of the Plaid Pantry on 181st and SE Stark just after 8 p.m. That’s when he ran into a man who threatened to kill him if he didn’t turn over his car keys and money, according to police.
Police said Stover told the man he had no cash. The suspect got into the car and started driving away when Stover jumped from the moving vehicle to escape.
Minutes later a Gresham officer saw the car near 174th and Main. Police followed until the man fled the car on foot near 168th and SE Stark. A K-9 team was called in but police did not find the suspect.
The only description investigators could give was that the suspect was a white man. Gang detectives were also called in on the case.
Stover had minor injuries from jumping out of the car.
Anyone with information in the case was asked to call the Gresham tip line at (503) 618-2719 or 1-888-989-3505.
