Lost hiker found safe near Multnomah Falls
10:25 PM PDT on Monday, May 28, 2007
Multnomah County Search and Rescue crews found a lost hiker with the help of a GPS device. The missing hiker, Sergei Alimovich Guryev, of Moscow, Russia, called 911 at about 2:30PM Monday after becoming lost in the woods in the Columbia River Gorge, several miles west of Multnomah Falls.
Guryev, who speaks limited English, was able to provide crews with his location using a GPS device he had with him. He did not have any food or water.
MCSO SAR personnel reached Guryev just before 7pm. He suffered some scratches from trekking through heavy brush off the trail, but was otherwise ok.
He was interviewed by MCSO SAR Coordinators, examined by Reach and Treat medics and given a ride back to his car.
Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Information Officer Jason Gates said without the GPS coordinates it is likely the search could have gone into the night.
Gates said Guryev did three things that were essential in finding him quickly. He carried a cell phone with a fully charged battery with which he was able to call for help. He had a working GPS unit that facilitated in pinpointing his position. And he stayed put once he had notified rescuers of his location.
Multnomah County Sheriff's Office reminders for hiking in the Columbia Gorge:
1. Make a plan and stick to it. Provide the location where you will be hiking and the time of your expected return to a family member or friends.
2. bring plenty of water and extra food.
3. Carry a cell phone.
4. Carry a GPS unit if you have one.
5. Carry extra clothes in the event you are injured or lost and are forced to stay out overnight.
6. Know where you are hiking and stay on the trails.
7. Use common sense.
