PORTLAND, Ore. -- TriMet officials Wednesday approved and announced fare hikes coming this September.

Cash fare for adults will increase by 25 cents and monthly passes will increase by $10. Youth/Student, Honored Citizen and LIFT cash fares will increase 10 cents and monthly passes will increase $2.

The increases go into effect Sept. 1st.

TriMet is creating a new 14-day pass to give riders the savings of a monthly pass, but the ability to purchase it in smaller increments, said TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch.

Check: Portland Gas Prices

Record-high diesel prices have pushed TriMet millions of dollars over budget, officials said, and now they have no other choice than to pass along the cost to passengers.
