Mark Luscher was on his second attempt to reach the top of the 29,000-foot peak.
Val Luscher said Friday evening her husband made it to the top with a guided team and was heading back to base camp.
Health problems turned him back last year when he went up with a small, independent team.
Luscher began climbing in 2002. The ascent to the top of Everest caps his bid to climb the highest peaks on each of seven continents.
