PORTLAND, Ore. -- An argument at a busy NE Portland intersection Tuesday lead to a parking lot altercation and stabbing, followed by a brief manhunt in the neighborhood.

Violent road rage in NE Portland

One driver was hospitalized and another was arrested on assault and weapons charges over a violent road rage incident on NE Sandy Boulevard during Tuesday’s rush hour.

Bystanders called to report a stabbing in Jack In The Box parking lot near the intersection of NE Sandy and NE 57th Ave. around 6:20 p.m., according to police.

The two drivers involved had apparently gotten into an argument that escalated. The two men began honking at each other, leading one to pull into the restaurant parking lot. The other man followed, according to witness reports to police.

Michael J. Thomas, 44, stabbed the other driver in his arm and then fled in a tan sedan.

The victim waited for police to arrive. Paramedics determined his stab wound was not life threatening and he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police then began searching for Thomas. His car was found nearby and officers began combing the area, tracking him to an address in the 4100 block of NE 82nd Ave. only to realize he wasn’t there.

However, an anonymous tip led police to a home near NE 82nd Ave. and NE Prescott St. where Thomas was taken into custody, about two hours after the stabbing was first reported.

Thomas was booked into Multnomah County Jail late Tuesday night on attempted assault, second-degree felony assault and unlawful use of a weapon charges. He was to be arraigned in court Wednesday afternoon, according to Officer Greg Pashley.

Capt. Bill Walker said it was unclear whether Thomas knew the residents at his hideout.

Disagreements are common on the roads, Walker said, but stabbing a driver over an intersection dispute is not something Portland police see every day.
