Police arrested one suspect and the other is still at large after a Vancouver man was shot in the back by a masked intruder in his apartment.

Gary Atkinson, 42, told police that he was asleep in his apartment at 10904 N.E. 48th Street when someone started banging on his door shortly after midnight.

Police said that when the Atkinson answered the door, two men wearing masks, one of whom was armed with a handgun, forced their way inside the apartment.

The Atkinson told police he tried to flee to the neighbor’s apartment but the suspects shot at him twice, hitting him once in the left shoulder before running from the scene. Atkinson’s wounds were relatively minor. He was treated and released from an area hospital.

Atkinson was able to recognize one of his assailants based on several factors including a unique tattoo. Police arrested Garry Alexander, 32, on Sunday. Atkinson and Alexander knew each other through a mutual friend.

The Vancouver Police Neighborhood Response Team and East Precinct officers are looking for the second suspect and recovering additional evidence.
