Obama pushes health care, Iraq war end on Roseburg stop
03:22 PM PDT on Saturday, May 17, 2008
ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A promise to end the Iraq war and deliver universal health care drew outbursts of heavy applause for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on a visit to the heart of Republican timber country in Oregon.
The Illinois senator packed about 1,500 people into the Roseburg High School cafeteria on Saturday to hear him repeat some of his campaign themes.
The response included shouts of "Obama rocks!" and a standing ovation in a county that has voted for Republicans in every presidential election since 1964.
Douglas County has been among the rural Oregon counties that have suffered economically with the decline in the timber industry -- the main source of jobs in the Roseburg area.
