PENTAGON -- Two military officers have been punished for leadership failures in the deaths of three US soldiers who were abducted and slaughtered south of Baghdad last June.

One of those abducted soldiers was Private First Class Thomas Tucker, from Madras, Oregon.

A military investigation concludes that the soldiers killed last year were not properly protected and that their mission was not well planned or executed.

The platoon leader and company commander have been relieved of their commands for failing to provide proper supervision to the unit or enforce military standards.

A summary of the investigation provided to The Associated Press reveals that insurgents may have rehearsed the attack two days earlier, and that Iraqi security forces probably saw and heard the attack but did nothing.
