Medical examiner says suspect in SE shooting killed himself

An autopsy confirmed that the suspect who died after a police-involved shooting in Southeast Portland early Thursday morning actually killed himself, according to the medical examiner.

Suspect Derek J. Coady, 43, died after getting shot in the head and the medical examiner said the bullet was from his own gun, not the officer's weapon.

KGW report on shooting

Officer Russel Corno, 38, did fire shots at Coady, but he missed, according to Sgt. Brian Schmautz with the Portland Police Bureau.

The shooting happened just before 6 a.m., near the intersection of 126th Avenue and SE Holgate. The suspect was wanted by the FBI and Portland officers were helping on the case.

Schmautz said officers attempted to talk to Coady and instructed him to put his weapon down. As Coady began to duck behind the front of a parked vehicle on the property, which would have provided him with a vantage point to possibly shoot at officers.

Officer Corno fired at least one round, Schmautz said. He is a 15-year veteran with the Portland Police Bureau.

A short time later, officers heard a gunshot from the area where Coady was hiding. A SERT team was activated and later found Coady's body.

No officers were injured.

This was the second police-involved shooting in Portland this week. Late Tuesday night, officers shot and killed a murder suspect who they said threatened them with a gun.

Police later revealed that the officer in Tuesday's deadly shooting was Scott McCollister, the officer involved in a controversial shooting five years ago.

The shooting of Kendra James launched grand jury and Federal Bureau of Investigation probes but McCollister was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing.

And in Bend, an officer was just cleared in a shooting that occurred on May 2.

In that case, a Bend police detective shot and killed a 28-year-old passenger in a vehicle that pulled up to a house during a drug raid.
