SALEM, Ore. – Human remains were discovered on a small island in the Willamette River, investigators confirmed Sunday.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the island between Salem and Independence at about noon Sunday, after someone found what looked like a human skeleton or skeletons.

Investigators were working the scene, but did not give an indication as to how long the remains had been there.
