Police warn of fake Portland Water Bureau employee
03:26 PM PDT on Friday, May 9, 2008
PORTLAND -- Police think a water bureau worker imposter may have scammed a customer out of cash after showing up at her front door.
The victim told police on April 29, the man pulled up in what looked like a city truck, came to her door and demanded $40 or her water would be shut off. The woman said she was nearing a deadline for paying her bill, so she offered to pay by check.

The man refused and said he would come back. He returned and collected $40 in a money order and $4 more.
The man was described as a white, older with a large build, reddish brown hair with a clean cut beard and mustache, and a space between his teeth. He wore a white button-up shirt with embroidery identifying him either as, "Stan," or "Steve." He had a tattoo on his forearm.
Bureau employees said they do not collect money from customers at their homes, and all employees carry city photo ID badges.
Anyone with information in the case was asked to call police.
