Oregon speed trap e-mail just a hoax
12:30 PM PDT on Friday, May 9, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. -- An e-mail circulating through in-boxes claims police in Oregon have been ordered to write more tickets to generate revenue.
More: Read the actual e-mail
Maybe you've received an e-mail that says Portland will launch a 21 day speeding frenzy. And the State of Oregon plans to make $9 million from speeding tickets.
It lists where the officers will be staked out watching for speeders.
But Lieutenant Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police says it's not true.
Hastings says that while tickets issued to speeders generate revenue, the fine is to get drivers to comply with the law.
He says no directive has been given to increase the number of tickets for speeding to generate revenue.
