Bicyclist found after trek through Oregon
12:42 PM PDT on Wednesday, May 9, 2007
A bicyclist from England reported missing during a trek through the Oregon Coast has been found, according to police.
Clive Ruddle, 49, of Aldbourne, Wiltshire, is safe in Eureka, Calif. His wife called police Wednesday morning after getting word from her missing husband.
As it turned out, the only major problem during his ride across the Oregon Coast was in getting a cell phone signal.
This is the e-mail his wife sent to police around 9 a.m., Wednesday.
"Les has just called me from Eureka where he has just arrived. We did not speak for long as he was on a pay phone - he has not been able to get a signal on his cell phone. Anyway, he is alive and well, and I am now feeling rather foolish for having alerted you all. I was extremely worried and thank you all from the bottom of my heart for taking me seriously and for all that you did so quickly," Diane Powell said.
Ruddle was supposed to arrive in the Northern California last Sunday, but did not show, Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Police said Tuesday.
Powell did not yet know why her husband had fallen so behind schedule.
"I am very sorry for the trouble I have caused you unnecessarily - and, believe me, my husband will now be contacting me at very regular intervals," she added, in the e-mail to police.
He had a cell phone, but had not used it since April 30, Hastings said. The bicyclist e-mailed his wife that same day, writing that he was in Tillamook County, which is on the northern coast of Oregon more than 200 miles from Eureka.
Hastings said Ruddle arrived in Seattle on April 19 and embarked on a West Coast bicycling trip after buying new cycling and camping equipment in Port Angeles, Wash.
Hastings said Ruddle is an experienced rider in good condition, and planned to camp in Oregon parks as he made his way south toward California.
The trip was expected to end in San Diego in early June.
Ruddle was described as 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, with gray receding hair and blue eyes. He has a scar on his left torso.
He was riding a new coffee-colored bicycle with two black saddlebags on the rear and two yellow saddlebags on the front. His helmet was gray with orange straps, and he wore a yellow cycling jacket.
