Arsonist set fire to Oney's Restaurant
04:57 PM PDT on Friday, May 9, 2008
Investigators Friday said the fire that destroyed Oney's Restaurant, a landmark along Highway 26, was set intentionally.
They determined the fire was set to an exterior wall.
Oney's Restaurant and Lounge, with the famous giant-sized Paul Bunyan logger sign out front, burned to the ground Tuesday night.
The three-alarm fire broke out around 10:30 p.m. Flames reached as high as forty feet into the air.

It took seven fire crews working throughout the night to get the fire under control and water had to be brought in from two miles away.

Oney's was a local landmark in the town of Elsie founded by "Oney" Camberg in the early 1920's to feed loggers. She later used the original Elsie school to add a bar to the restaurant.

Oney died in 2003 at the age of 94.
A rock with a plaque honoring Oney in front of the charred debris withstood the fire while many locals stood in awe of what was left of the landmark, which had been there for the past 60 years.
Police ask that anyone with information about the arson call the Oregon Arson Hotline at 800-452-7888.
