Sky 8 over search

STEVENSON, Wash. -- The Coast Guard suspended its search for three tribal fishermen missing since their boat capsized in the Columbia River this week.

Family members of the three fishermen feared drowned in the Columbia River told KGW the men were cousins and had dealt with their own tragedy before.

One of the men, whose names have not yet been released, lost his father about ten years ago in a fishing accident on the Columbia, according to his uncle, Davis Washines.

“His father was killed several years ago, also the victim of a tragic accident out here,” Washines said.

Coast Guard and Skamania County sheriff's authorities Thursday resumed the search for the three men who had gone fishing on Tuesday night but suspended the search Thursday afternoon due to rough weather conditions.

A dive team searched the murky water Thursday with the help of specialized sonar equipment.

The men were reported missing on Wednesday morning and their overturned boat was found near Stevenson on Wednesday afternoon. Investigators said there were no signs of the fisherman inside the boat.

“If they’re still in the water, the likelyhood is very low certainly, but there’s still a lot of possibilities,” said Sheriff Dave Brown.

Family members keeping vigil along the river told KGW the men were experienced fishermen.

"They’re all experienced. Nobody knows what happened 'cause it was just the three of them," a family member told KGW.

The men had planned to fish near the mouth of the Wind River, according to Skamania County Undersheriff Dave Cox.
