Driver chased by bat-wielding mob after Kelso park rampage
06:28 PM PDT on Tuesday, May 6, 2008
KELSO, Wash. -- A busy day at the park turned into a terrifying experience in Kelso last weekend.
Investigators say, a man drove his truck right through several crowds and softball games before ramming a police vehicle.
Police and witnesses agree, it is lucky no one was seriously injured or even killed. Roughly 400 to 500 people were in Tam O’ Shanter Park during the melee Sunday afternoon.
“The park was a madhouse that day. It was completely packed and he was driving on the grass and through people and through parties and through games,” said witness Barry O’Neal.
Several angry players chased the suspect with bats.
Surveillance video from the park shows police responding to reports of a suspicious man. Officer tried to block the exit when the suspect rammed his truck into a police SUV.
Officer say, the man pretended to have a gun. Police tasered him before taking the suspect into custody.
After his arrest, court records indicate 29-year old Aaron Strader told police he was high on drugs. In addition to the rampage in Kelso, police say, Strader is accused of shooting his girlfriend near Tacoma.
