HILLSBORO -- A Hillsboro elementary school teacher accused of stealing a student's coat and then trying to sell it on eBay told KGW it's all a big misunderstanding.

"I look forward to the time when I can tell my story. It's a terrible misunderstanding. I feel bad for all the kids and parents involved," Elizabeth Logan told KGW Friday morning.

She added that quite a few parents had come forward on her behalf, showing growing support during this difficult time.

"I'm very pleased with the parent support," she said.

Logan made her first court appearance Friday.

Logan, who teaches first grade at Jackson Elementary School, is currently on paid administrative leave.

Police said she put a female student's Columbia Sportswear jacket for sale on the popular auction Web site, where the student's mother -- who was searching eBay for a replacement -- noticed what she suspected was her daughter's coat. The mother also noticed the seller was from Hillsboro.

“It’s a very sad situation for everybody involved…it’s hard because they're little kids, they don’t understand why their teacher is gone,“ said school principal Janis Hill.

Logan initially told investigators she found the jacket in a lost and found bin at the school. She later changed her story, saying she bought the coat at a Goodwill store, according to Hillsboro Police Lt. Mike Rouches.

The teacher found a buyer offering $46 for the coat, which has a retail value of $114, but her dog shredded the jacket before it changed hands, Rouches said.

Logan's annual salary is $68,891.

The incident allegedly occurred in late January.
