LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. – An overnight fire claimed the life of a mother while her son barely escaped the flames by jumping out of a second story window.

Carol Frank, 56, died in the fire, authorities said.

Andrew Frank, 16, was able to make it out of the burning condominium and tried to open the door using a hidden key. He was unable to go inside because the fire was so intense, according to Gert Zoutendijk, spokesperson for the Lake Oswego Fire Department.

Andrew called 9-1-1 and rushed to a neighbor's house for help. The neighbor, Sue Ellen Hodnot, told KGW that she and her husband raced across the street.

"We wanted to go in and help her, but we couldn't get in," Hodnot said. "As we were standing there, stuff was falling down. It was billowing out of the window and it was getting bigger and bigger and bigger."

The first firefighters arrived at 186 D Avenue around 12:20 Thursday morning. Crews reported seeing heaving flames coming from both the first and second floors of the condo.

The Lake Oswego Fire Department units realized they needed more help so they called in a second alarm. Other crews from Portland and the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue responded.

Zoutendijk said it took about 40 minutes to extinguish all the flames.

The majority of the fire damage was contained to just the one unit, but neighboring units had minor smoke damage.

Once the fire was put out, the investigation to determine the cause of the fire started. It is unknown what may have sparked the fire.

No one else was seriously hurt.
