Man awakes with hair on fire, saves family from house fire

PORTLAND – A family was able to escape a burning house, without any functioning smoke detectors, because their son woke up with his hair on fire.
Jake Campbell, 27, said he just “freaked out” when he realized his hair was burning.
“I tried to get the fire extinguisher but I guess it was too old and it didn’t work,” said Campbell. “I started yelling fire and got out.”
Campbell was treated for minor injuries.
As the flames burned, Campbell’s mother and father were sleeping in the other room and were able to make it out safely along with two of their dogs.
The Portland Fire Bureau said the first call into 9-1-1 came in at 3:27 Tuesday morning and the first crews arrived at 8504 Southeast Glenwood Street at 3:32 a.m.
Crews reported seeing intense smoke and flames coming from the rear side of the house.
When the flames were extinguished investigators started looking into a cause of the fire. They were concentrating their efforts in the bedroom, kitchen and back porch areas, according to the Portland Fire Bureau.
No one else was seriously hurt.
