Medford firefighters killed when ATV fell 2,000 ft. down slope
04:12 PM PDT on Friday, April 25, 2008
MEDFORD, Ore. – Two firefighters died after a long fall down a grassy slope during an all terrain vehicle accident, according to the Medford Mail Tribune.
The paper reported that the men, whose names have not been released, tumbled 2,000 feet on the west side of Johns Peak near Jacksonville.
They had been riding in the area Thursday afternoon. Searchers found their ATV Friday morning at the bottom of the slope in the Forest Creek drainage.
Firefighters and rescuers from Jackson, Klamath and Josephine counties had joined the search effort Thursday evening after the two men failed to return by 5:30 p.m., according to the Tribune.
By morning, five helicopters were also involved in the search. The ATV was spotted from one of the helicopters.
