BANKS, Ore. -- A Washington County deputy saved the life of a suspect who led him on a high speed chase Tuesday evening, authorities said.

The suspect's flipped car.

Patrick Shane Echols, 29, refused to stop when the deputy tried to pull him over for reckless driving on Highway 6, said Sgt. David Thompson, spokesman for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy followed Echols to Highway 26 and Northwest Hahn Road, where Echols eventually rolled his car down an embankment and was ejected. The car landed on top of him.

“The deputy hurried down the embankment and saw a female passenger crawl out of the car. He ran around the car and saw Mr. Echols’ feet sticking out from under the roof of the overturned car,” Thompson said.

The man who owns the land happened to be in the area with a tractor and lifted the car off Echols while the deputy reached under the vehicle and pulled the suspect out.

Echols' face was blue but soon he took a large breath and slowly came around, according to Thompson.

He was transported by Life Flight Air Ambulance to Oregon Health Sciences University. His passenger was transported by ground ambulance to St. Vincent’s Hospital. Her injuries were not life-threatening.

Echols was wanted on a felony warrant for a parole violation. He also has a revoked driver’s license because of excessive DUII convictions, Thompson said.

Over the past seven years, Echols was booked into the Washington County Jail 10 times.

“Ironically, the same deputy who saved him had arrested him last year for drinking and driving,” Thompson said.

After he is released from the hospital, Echols will face charges including reckless driving, attempting to elude a police officer, assault, DUII and recklessly endangering another person.
