Bogus letter urges Lincoln parents to get kids booze on prom night
06:20 PM PDT on Thursday, April 24, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. -- A bogus letter urging parents of Lincoln High School students to supply kids with alcohol on prom night and to open their homes for sex and alcohol and drug use was sent to families this week, school officials said Thursday.
An excerpt from the bogus letter.
“If you provide the alcohol, you can have peace of mind knowing that they did not acquire it illegally,” the letter reads.

It even gives quantity recommendations.
“The Oregon Liquor Control Commission has stated that a fifth of alcohol, like Hennessy Cognac, is sufficient supply for at least 8 adults. One can assume that for 17 to 18 year old individuals, one fifth can probably be spread out to 4 students. Considering our reputation (Drinkin’ Lincoln), in some cases one fifth is only enough for a single person.”
The letter urges parents to adopt a “realistic approach” to drug and alcohol abuse as well as sexual activity.
Two condoms were included with the letters, which appeared to have been printed on school letterhead.
It’s unclear how many parents received the letter and how the student or students behind it got access to parent names and addresses, said Matt Shelby, spokesman for the Portland Public School District.
School officials sent an e-mail and also posted a letter on the school Web site telling parents the original letter was apparently a student prank.

Officials would like to hear from all parents who received the letter and are trying to identify the author (s).
Whoever is responsible could face criminal charges.
