Molalla H.S. basketball players in abuse case likely headed to jail
05:57 PM PDT on Tuesday, April 22, 2008
The sexual assault case against four former members of the Molalla High School boys basketball team has ended with no contest pleas in a deal with prosecutors.
The four players admitted they assaulted a younger teammate during a 2006 road trip after a series of hazing incidents escalated, with at least one older teammate penetrating the boy using his finger.
Two of the older defendants, described as ringleaders, pleaded no contest to assault and were expected to serve 30 days in jail.
The two younger boys pleaded as juveniles and face seven days in juvenile detention.
By accepting the deal, the teens avoid more serious sex charges and will not have to register as sex offenders.
A fifth player is expected to join the plea deal. All five also face similar charges in Deschutes County.
The abuse among teammates occurred during two road trips -- one to Central Oregon, just after Christmas in 2006, and the other to the Oregon Coast.
When the case initially surfaced, three students were suspended from school and parents of the accused basketball players said the allegations of sex abuse were grossly exaggerated.
In court on Tuesday, four of the five defendants pleaded no contest to lesser charges, as part of a deal with prosecutors.
They will be formally sentenced in May but details of the deal were already fairly clear.
In addition, prosecutors told KGW that the Molalla staff and coaches were aware of the abuse but failed to report it, which they should have done, per state law.
The district superintendent said he notified DHS as soon as he learned of the allegations.
Prosecutors fear there are other young teammates who were abused, but are too scared to come forward.
